Bartlett Mettham is committed to placing reuse at the core of our design philosophy. We recognise that the reuse of buildings, components, and materials is one of the most effective ways to reduce carbon emissions, conserve resources, and minimise waste.
Our commitments are as follows:
Prioritise reuse: Retain and creatively reinvent existing structures wherever possible. Specify reclaimed or recycled materials to preserve embodied carbon and reduce waste.
Design for longevity: Create buildings that are adaptable, durable, and capable of being repurposed in the future.
Reduce reliance on mechanical systems when possible: Maximise passive design including daylight, natural ventilation, heat recovery, and solar to reduce dependance on energy intensive mechanical systems.
Source locally: Continue to work with local suppliers and craftspeople to reduce transport emissions and refine collaboration.
Innovate responsibly: Explore new technologies that support circular design and improve lifetime performance.
Lead by example: Operate an environmental management system to continually reduces waste, energy use, and pollution. Continue to promote sustainable design within the practice.
This policy is reviewed annually to ensure continual improvement, alignment with evolving environmental standards, and delivery of architecture that contributes positively to people, place, and planet.
